Dear Berri - Barmera friends,
I contest in the council election, as you know.
Please have a look at the grounds that I would like to work on, if I am elected.
1. Bring down the council rates.
Reason: Berri - Barmera Council has got higher council rates, when compared to other neighbouring councils.
How to work on: I heard that the other councils in this region are outsourcing the council jobs, there by they have brought down the rates. I am sure that we could do something around this to bring it down.
2. Infrastructure Developments: Bitumen Roads, foot paths and speed limits need to be further developed or upgraded or taken care of. Speed limits have to be modified on the roads according to the conditions of the road.
Reason: People have expressed to me that the dirt roads and foot paths (atleast some if not all) need to be turned into bitumen and concreted for comfortable usage.
What steps that I have taken so far: Few years ago I have talked about it in the ABC Radio.
3. More businesses in this region: Try to bring more businesses in this region.
Reason: I was told that recent entry of Bunnings would provide nearly 50 jobs to the locals. More businesses will bring more jobs to the people living in Berri-Barmera region.
How: We need to negotiate with the business people.
4. Berri Oval: Berri oval needs some work to make it more sport friendly.
Why: I had a chat with the Berri ( A Grade and B Grade) Cricket coach, regarding the conditions of the Berri oval. I also have played for Berri B grade cricket team for a very little time. The sand patches needs to be covered up properly for smooth sports activities.
5. University Studies: Renmark has got the Flinders University Campus for Nursing studies. But it would be more helpful for the parents and their children if we have some more University studies in our region. Studies like Education, Law and Degrees in Plant science are more relevant to the students from Riverland.
What is happening now: When I was in a council meeting as a spectator, a representative from Riverland Development Center told the council that some negotiations are going on to bring the University courses to Riverland region. So we need to work on that further.
Please give your kind views on this. Please advise me if I need any clarity on these issues. Please let me know if you have any other issues or comments.
